Cause Of Death Of Woman Who Disappeared In Manhattan Ruled Inconclusive
JUNE 26TH, 2003

The Medical Examiner’s office on Thursday reclassified the cause of Svetlana Aronov's death as “inconclusive.”

Aronov disappeared on March 3 while walking her dog near her Upper East Side apartment. A garage attendant later came forward to say he saw her and the dog getting into a cab a few blocks from her apartment on York Avenue.

Investigators had immediately suspected foul play, because there was no indication she had planned to be out for more than just a few minutes, taking only her cell phone and keys and leaving her wallet.

Detectives handed out thousands of leaflets and checked out various leads, including possible links to the Russian mob and her extra-marital affair, but there were no major breaks in the case until the body surfaced in the East River on May 6.

An autopsy ruled Aronov died from drowning, but the M.E. continued investigating to see whether she jumped, fell, or was pushed into the water. Now, the M.E.'s office says it can't tell exactly how Aronov ended up in the water.

The new ruling is considered final, but the M.E.'s office says it will re-open the case if necessary.
